Information about steroid injections is covered on a different page. Although children are usually given the chicken pox vaccine, if your child is receiving high-dose steroids we recommend siblings or other close family members have it. Please ask your doctor for more information about immunisations. Your doctor may reduce your dose or suggest taking your tablets less often (for example, every other day) if you’re having side effects.

Give them the contact details for your cancer doctor so they can ask for advice. This gives your body a chance to adjust and get used to making its own steroids again. Sometimes, when taken in higher doses, steroids can cause confusion or changes in thinking. Steroids can make you feel hungrier than usual and you may gain weight. Your appetite should go back to normal when you stop taking steroids. If you are worried about gaining weight, talk to your doctor or nurse.

Other medicines, food and drink

Steroids can affect the speed at which your body breaks down food to get energy from it (your metabolism). This can increase your hunger levels, leading you to eat more and to gain weight. If your metabolism slows down, you might gain weight, even if your appetite doesn’t increase. Be aware of any signs of infection and seek medical advice straightaway if you notice any.

You may have, for example, a blood test three months after you start taking it, then annually. If you are taking sulphasalazine you may need slightly more frequent blood tests. Sulphasalazine can cause male infertility by reducing the sperm count, but this usually resolves once the drug is stopped. Sulphasalazine can also reduce the body’s ability to absorb folates (B vitamins) which are essential for blood cell formation.

What are the potential side effects?

Users also frequently combine several different types of anabolic steroids in a process known as “stacking”.
